As a new school we have a unique opportunity to develop the transition program our future Prep students want and need.
Traditionally, schools run orientation programs in the last few weeks of the school year for parents and students to become familiar with the school setting with tours and opportunities to meet teachers. Whereas, through a transition process children and families start to feel a sense of belonging, with frequent visits and opportunities to engage with multiple staff members over time. An effective transition program will ensure future Prep students, parents and educators can establish a positive responsive relationship. These types of relationships support children to become active contributors to their world while strengthening their interests and skills.
Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international agreement on childhood states “Children have the right to say what they think should happen when adults are making decisions that affect them and to have their opinions taken into account”. As we all know children can not have a say in all matters that affect them, however, this is an opportunity our school is able to offer them at this time.
The Hearing Children’s Voices – Our Transition Project is a qualitative research project to gain insight into children's (and families’) perspectives to support the development and implementation of the 2024 Prep Transition Program. The research will be conducted with children and families residing within the South Rock State School catchment due to commence Prep in 2024. Facilitation of the research will be conducted by local Early Childhood Education Centres and families, with our support. Children may contribute drawings, videos or audio recordings to answer questions and complete surveys. Families will also receive a survey or questionnaire to ensure the program also meets the needs of the families.
